NBC San Diego is identifying the 20 most influential people in San Diego, and you’re one of the hundreds of nominees we’re looking at. It’s all a build-up to the launch of “The 20” in early 2011.

Who will be part of The 20? We’re working with Twitter to identify the people who are at the center of the conversation in San Diego right now. This list of 20 influencers won’t be static: As news breaks and different people make waves in the local conversation, we’ll swap names in and out.

What will it mean if we include your Twitter handle in The 20? For starters, you can tell your friends (and we’ll tell the city) that NBC San Diego has identified you as part of this exclusive group.

Think of it like a panel of people who care about the city: We’ll interact with panel members through everything from reTweets to on-air segments.

We’ll be talking to members on occasion as news dictates. If you’re added to The 20, your participation in interviews and panels would be voluntary and you will have no ongoing obligation.

We’re launching soon. If you have any Tweeps that you think deserve nomination, let us know.

2. Maybe you created the map, or the board on which it hung, or the website where I initially found the hike I took today. Maybe you’re the person who cuts back the wild plants, or nudges loose rocks back in their place when they block the trail. Whoever you are, the hike today was brilliant and clear, just the way you intended.

3. You work at my neighborhood Mexican-food restaurant. Friendly, like a starving dog is friendly, you sweat profusely and never look me in the eyes. With short, rapid movements your shaking hands clean dirty tables again, again and again. Always, words of apology are tumbling from a mouth so full of broken teeth for months I thought you didn’t speak English. I know what it’s like, trying to quit, and I’m giving you the credit no one who knows you is willing to give you anymore. It’s not for being employable, however long it may last. Or for depositing your first paycheck in 23 years, or saying no to the beer. I’m giving you credit just for trying.
